The symbol of Buddha holds many meanings. For us it represents our connection to the divinity in all living things,
as stated in the meaning of the Reiki distant healing symbol, " Buddha in me greets the Buddha in you."
These pieces are made of hydrostone, a gypsum compound suitable for indoor or outdoor placement.
Gautama Buddha was born in 563 b.c. at Kapilavastu, on the border of Nepal. The Buddha, then known as Siddhartha, was the son of the King of the Sakyas, Suddhodana and Queen Maya. Siddhartha lived in the protected splendor of the palace and at age sixteen was married to Princess Yasodhara (who later became his disciple and was known as the Lady of the Lotus). They had a son named Rahula.
After seeing a deteriorating old man, an invalid, and an ascetic beggar, he learned of suffering and decided to embrace asceticism. Soon afterwards, at age 29, Siddhartha left the palace and his family and went to a hermitage where he became the monk, Gautama, or, as he is still called, Sakyamuni (The Sage of the Sakyas). One day, meditating under a sacred fig tree, he attained perfect illumination (Bodhi), becoming a Buddha. After that he traveled fourty-five years, teaching Buddhism, which was to become a major world religion. He died at Kusinagara at age 80.
