Balancing Act

Opposites and contrast are part of the design of our physical and inner worlds. The conditions of night and day are mirrored in our states of waking and sleep. A need for quiet contemplation may follow a period of intense activity. After a period of physical inactivity, we may feel the need for exercise. Following a stretch of solitude, we may spend time talking with friends.

Balance in our inner and outer lives is a matter of listening to our inner promptings, and as long as we're tuned into our needs, we rarely get very much out of balance. However, sometimes the demands of the outside world begin to seem huge. We may feel there's too much to do and not enough time. We may spend so much time taking care of the needs of others that we neglect our own. We may give one troubling issue so much negative focus that we lose sight of all that's positive in our lives.

Any of the above (and many other situations) can get us out of balance. The more we get focused on the outside world, the more we may become disconnected from our inner selves. When that happens we feel a lack of guidance, we may find ourselves not knowing what we want. We only know we feel a vague or sometimes dissatisfaction. In seeking satisfaction we may find ourselves reaching for comforting substances which quickly become addictive.

Times of mental and emotional confusion, dissatisfaction, and physical and mental exhaustion are warning signs that we need to restore ourselves to balance. Depending on how much we've gotten out of balance, we may feel overwhelmed and not know where to begin.

The first step in the process of restoring balance is inner fine-tuning, getting into a vibrational state of balance. Once we do this we find that our experiences in the outer world stop feeling like life on a seesaw—or a revolving door that never stops.

Below, I list and describe some crystals that help to restore inner balance. Although I describe brief meditations as well, you can often get similar benefits by wearing or carrying a crystal.

Clear Quartz and Smoky Quartz

This exercise is good for all occasions and also serves as a very good beginning for longer meditations or chakra balancing. Clear quartz represents and draws in pure universal energy. Smoky quartz draws in grounding and stabilizing energy.

You can do a very simple seated or lying down meditation holding these in your hands. (I do not have a preference for which hand should hold a particular crystal.)

Inhale, visualize grounding energy coming up from your feet and through your body. When you reach the top of your head, imagine pure white light coming in through the crown and going down to your feet.

Do this for as long as it takes you to feel balanced and calm.

Note: You can use any of the other grounding crystals: black tourmaline, hematite, tiger's eye, obsidian, etc. I have a preference for smoky.

A Golden Topaz Meditation

Golden topaz is one of the best energy balancers. If you're feeling depleted it can help to restore active energy. If you're feeling as if all your circuits are overloaded, it can help to smooth you out.

To use it you can either hold it in your hand or place it in the navel or solar plexus area. Again, slowly inhale and exhale. As you do so imagine warm golden energy filling your entire body. You may wish to visualize and feel it as warm, flowing honey or imagine that you're lying on the beach feeling the rays of the sun gently warming you.

Take your time and enjoy yourself with this meditation.

Emotional Balancing: Moonstone and Opal

Emotional imbalance can take a number of specific forms, but if we analyze them we see that they usually fall into two categories: feeling emotionally blocked or emotionally overwhelmed. For blockages I recommend opal; while for overwhelm I recommend moonstone.

Sometimes emotions seem so painful that we just shut down. However, since our emotions guide us in making decisions best for us, shutting them down is like driving at night without headlights. We need to restore our emotional awareness, and opal, a stone that's thirty percent water, helps to mirror and magnify emotions.

I recommend putting this stone on the heart or solar plexus. You can soften its effect by placing beside it aventurine or rose quartz. Breathe slowly and deeply and focus on positive feelings. Remember occasions that have made you happy. Think of people you love. Allow good, expansive feelings to feel you.

I would also place moonstone on the solar plexus or heart area. This crystal's soft and translucent light has a calming and stabilizing effect on emotions. While meditating with this stone, focus on your breathing, inhaling and exhaling as deeply as possible.

Anxiety Relief: Rhodochrosite

It would be difficult to estimate the quantities of drugs sold to relieve anxiety. I believe that a lot of anxiety could be relieved by the simple act of deep breathing. Lying down, breathing deeply, with a rhodochrosite on your solar plexus, is one of the best ways to get back into balance.

As you inhale and exhale, imagine this crystal's rich, deep color, and imagine its warm, relaxing energy filling every pore of your body. I also recommend adding rhodochrosite for all the other exercises in this article.

For Mental Confusion: Sodalite

A lot of the stress we experience comes from being unsure about decisions we need to make. Dark-blue sodalite is invaluable for states of mental confusion, especially when aggravated by emotional turbulence. It has a wonderfully calming effect that allows us to view our choices from a detached perspective. It is also valuable for helping to dissolve habitual ways of thinking and allowing new ways of seeing situations to emerge.

If you have to make a decision, lie down, placing a sodalite on your forehead. Inhale and exhale deeply, imagine a cooling, calming deep blue energy filling you, soothing your nerves.

It can help here to slowly repeat affirmations such as, "I trust myself," "There is no one right decision," or whatever fits the particular situation.

The Star of David Layout:
For Overall Grounding and Stabilizing

I have described this crystal layout elsewhere, and it certainly belongs in an article on vibrational balancing.

To do this, you need six quartz crystals of approximately the same size. One goes at your head, one at your feet, one by each shoulder and one by each hip. The crystals create a network of grounding and calming energy.

Alternatively, you can sit and hold a merkabah crystal. This is basically a three-dimensional Star of David. It helps to activate the protective love of the Universe and awakens, heals, and transforms on the spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional levels.

I find that when I hold or wear a merkabah (both of mine are smoky quartz), even if I do nothing else to bring myself back into balance, I become more calm and stable.

Essences for Balance

Rescue Remedy is probably the most effective essence for immediate rebalancing. A composite of five Bach Flower Remedies, its overall purpose is to alleviate panic, shock, compulsive feelings, a feeling of disconnection to the physical body or physical plane, and impatience and irritability. You need not have all the above conditions to benefit from taking it.

Scleranthus (Bach) is also very good for a state of imbalance, especially if you feel yourself swinging from one state to another or a flurry of opposite feelings and/or thoughts resulting in confusion.

For low energy expressed as apathy, Wild Rose (Bach) can be very helpful. For a feeling of excessive energy which shows up as irritability and impatience, Impatiens (Bach) is helpful. Chamomile (FES) is good for anxiety.
