There are many different opinions about where the Scottish Highland bagpipe originated. Some believe it originated in the Gaelic-speaking areas of the Highlands and western Scottish islands during the 1500s and was developed for the next 300 years. It was widely used in the clan society to announce gatherings and for the playing of long solo pieces. When this society collapsed the bagpipe might have disappeared had not large numbers of Highlanders brought their pipes with them when they were recruited into the British Army. The traditional songs were adapted into marching tunes, and the pipe band, today a popular institution, was born.
Another source says: The Great Highland Bagpipe has long been a traditional Scottish Musical Instrument. Although there are many varieties of the bagpipe (the oldest coming from the Middle East and dating far back into history). The Scottish variety has become the most well known and loved.
Yet another believes: The bagpipe made its way to Scotland in about 470 A.D. when Prince Fergus MacErc and the Scots came to Scotland from the north of Ireland.
