Think Reiki

In our workshops we make a special point of telling our students that when the class ends their work with Reiki is only beginning. For Reiki I students that means giving themselves treatments regularly, as well as to others. For Reiki II students it also means regularly using the symbols.

The more we practice Reiki the more open we become as channels for that energy, the more that energy is available to us to heal blockages on all levels of our lives. You may not always remember this; you may suffer along with a sore knee or a broken heart and forget to use Reiki. We' done it ourselves- recently.

Really Distant Healing

In June, while we were on vacation in Hawaii, several thousand miles from home, our catsitter called to tell us that our cat, Brendan, had an apparently painful eye infection, and that the next day she planned to take him to the veterinarian. He might have to stay overnight. Various scenarios, one worse than the next, flooded us. We envisioned Brendan in pain and frightened; we saw him crying in the car all the way to the veterinary clinic; we imagined him overnight in an unfamiliar place, while our other cat, Binx, was completely alone in our house. We contemplated the ruination of our vacation, moped around for a few miserable moments. Then we realized that something was missing from this picture. Oh, right. Reiki. We began distant healing at once, visualizing Brendan- eye as completely healthy.

After a few days without a report we left a message for the sitter to call us at our next stop in San Diego. A message was waiting for us there. It read: " was completely better the day after we spoke. I didn' have to take him to the vet."

Troubleshooting

When is it appropriate to think Reiki? Whenever a problem comes up, whenever you feel depressed or anxious or any other unhappy mental/emotional state, any time when life doesn' seem to be working. Reiki isn' the only thing you can do; often it can help you decide what to do next- in the following example.

Jean, who has taken Reiki I and II, has a career dilemma. At her present job, in which she' happy working, she' been offered a raise and a promotion. She has also been approached by another company, one which has just started up, to join them and to help create a new business enterprise.

To stay at her present job will maintain her security. To join the new company is a risk and a challenge. She is terribly worried about making the wrong choice. She talks to friends, who listen, but wisely say that they can' make the decision for her. She has some sleepless nights, then remembers that her Reiki Master said that giving oneself a treatment is good for insomnia. She begins to treat herself, and when she places her hands over the top of her head she suddenly remembers that she can use the mental/emotional balance symbol to clear up confusion. She continues to Reiki herself; when she reaches the heart position she feels tremendous tension. She keeps her hands there and remembers that when she was a small child her parents got divorced, and she felt torn between them. She senses that these unhealed feelings are contributing to her present confusion and decides to send distant healing to traumas which originated in the past.

The next day she takes some time to send healing to her eight-year-old self using the long distance symbol. In doing so she uses the power symbol to intensify the energy and the mental/emotional balance symbol to clear up her childhood confusion. She also sends energy to the future, visualizing herself happy with whatever choice she makes. She does distant healing the following two days and also gives herself daily treatments in order to keep herself calm and centered. By the fourth day she is able to make a clear decision about which job is better for her at the present time.

Know What the Problem Is

When you use distant healing in this way it can be valuable to be clear on the nature of your problem and on your desired outcome. Say, for example, that you' having communication difficulties with a spouse or partner. You decide the problem is that whenever your discussion seems to be turning into an argument you both back off, and that the outcome you desire is to be able to express and get through anger. As you perform the distant healing visualize the issue being resolved. (Though you may have a specific resolution in mind it' sometimes wiser to leave this open.) You may also want to Reiki your heart and throat chakras. If, upon ending the distant healing you' not completely confident that you can achieve the desired conclusion, ask for guidance. This may come to you through a dream or insight. Work with this information and continue to do distant healing until you feel ready to initiate a discusion with the other person.

You can adapt this process to whatever issues are blockages for you. The more you do so the more natural it will become for you, whenever a crisis arises, to THINK REIKI.

Healing Fear

There' been some discussion in our most recent Reiki worshops about proposed legislation to curtail or eliminate our right to practice alternative healing. This is an important issue for us, and we encourage all of you to support campaigns to protect- expand- rights in whatever way seems appropriate.

Our concern is with the spirit in which we respond to those who oppose our rights. We' gotten quite angry about it, but we' realized that anger only deepens the divisions between us and those who seem to view us as a threat to their well-being.

Threat is the key word. We' all living in a time of enormous changes; some of us are moving forward, and others are so afraid that they want to go back to what they imagine was a better world, one which lacked so many dangerous choices and challenges.

We can heal the divisions between them and us when we recognize that while we move forward it' sometimes with fear and hesitation, when we acknowledge that we have more in common with our adversaries than we may have thought. In accepting this connection we can approach a deeper one, the realization that universal life force energy doesn' discriminate between right-wing born agains and liberal, holistic, spiritual types. We are all composed of the same essence.

Knowing this gives us a special opportunity to think Reiki. The distant healing symbol learned in Reiki II means, " Buddha in me speaks to the Buddha in you."

Many years ago St. Francis wrote, "Where there is hatred let me sow love." If we can do the same we can witness a change in the lives of others- in our own.
